12 principles of Design

In this warmup, we are taking a picture of our home and using it to create three postcards. These postcards are supposed to take inspiration vintage travel postcards, as well as utilize the 12 principles of design. For this warmup, I used Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Express.

For this postcard, I wanted to emulate the old, grainy quality of vintage postcards while retaining some color. I also blurred some of the photo in order to emulate that effect. The overall tone is serious, with the text in bold black font in all capital letters. For the principles, I used Movement in this postcard. I wanted to viewers to look up to down, first looking at the picture and then to the bottom. There is more Emphasis on the photo than on the text. I want the location to speak for itself.

For this postcard, I was inspired by the bright, colorful vintage travel postcards. Here, the colors are less muted and more saturated. The tone is cheery and light-hearted. I used Contrast for the text. The intro is in a fancy cursive font with a lighter red color, while the script text is a darker red in a thick bold font in all capital letters. The two styles contrast each other, and the colors contrast against the bluish background and sky. The Movement goes from the text at the top, which introduces the picture below.

With this postcard, I wanted to make it like one of those retro black and white handmade postcards. The image is black and white instead of color, and there is a photo frame around it. The postcard should look grounded and historical. The text is in cursive font in order to make it look like its someone's handwriting. I used emphasis, hierarchy and movement in this postcard. The words are small-sized and at the bottom, meaning the image is more important than the words. I wanted to make it feel someone took a picture and wrote the location down afterwards, then sent it to a friend so the friend knows what the place looks like.
